How do you set up a face-washing routine?
I want to start using a regular routine to wash my face but I don’t know where to start. I don’t understand what cleansers, toner, etc. are, so could you explain what those kinds of things are? And what order do I do these things in (ex. moisturize, then cleanse, then exfoliate etc…)? Thanks sooo much! And which brands do you recommend?
generally you want to wash nightly in this order:
if you use makeup, you’ll want a makeup remover – start with that before cleansing. the body shop’s chamomile eye makeup remover works well.
1. cleanse or use a gentle combo cleanse/exfoliate (cleans away makeup, dirt and oils. using warm water open pores and allows dirt to be rinsed away)
2. rinse well with warm water
3. blot dry, gently
4. tone (wipes away last bits of oily residue and closes up your pores again nice and clean)
3. moisturize (even if you have oily skin, you want to protect with a moisturizer)
if you have oily skin, you may want to wash am and pm, but avoid the urge to over-strip the skin of it’s natural oils, as your skin will start to produce more.
you have to be a bit careful not to over exfoliate by exfoliating too often or with a poor quality scrub. things like the st. ives apricot scrub are an example of what *not* to use. they feel like they are really cleaning your skin, but they are made with crushed apricot pits which are sharp and are actually damaging your skin.
i have used proactive and liked it a lot. i also have used the body shop products (having sold them for several years) and find them to also be very good. if you are looking for something all natural, nyr organic is very good and they have trained people to make sure you get what is best for your skin type.
