Is it considered safe for your Laser Printer to use off-brand Replacement Toner cartridges?
I have a Dell 1720dn laser printer and need a replacement Toner Cartridge. I notice that the “Dell brand compatible” ones (i.e., not made by Dell) are about 30 to 50 percent of the price of a Dell brand cartridge. Just wondering if those off-brand cartridges are generally considered safe for your printer and, if so, whether there’s a particular brand that’s considered best?
I would be careful even if the other answer said it is ok. Laser Toner is not just laser toner I will give you an example. I am a former HP tech and a lot of people used third party or re-manufactured toner in their printers. Sometimes the toner would leak and void the warranty and other times the toner cartridge would get stuck in the printer. Also many off brand toners have less toner in them and give an inferior print quality. Of course it is your choice, but working as an hp tech for ten years I know for a fact that off brand toners and Ink Cartridges are not the same as the companies brand. I no longer work for HP so I do not have an agenda here, I just want you to be aware that there is always risks when you do not buy the companies recommended brand. It is not like anti-freeze, not all toner and ink cartridges are created equal.

P.S: Chris check your warranty as well, make sure that Dell will still cover repairs if your printer is damaged using off-brand toner. I know HP voids the warranty if damage occurs using third party toner. Just want to make sure if you do buy off-brand toner you are protected if damage occurs.
