Not opposites attract? Compatibility and your Myers-Briggs Personality Type

It's the classic story of The Odd Couple: the soul of the party, so gives you an excuse to leave early. It is orderly and meticulous, while leaving the milk on the counter and clothing on the floor. Obviously it is emotional, is from Mars, is Venus. Much has been made of the idea that opposites attract, and we know all but one of those couples "strange" that makes a relationship work, despite major differences. But is it true that opposites attract? And most importantly, what is the relationship more successful is the stimulation of reverse or sister soul comfort?

Many researchers have attempted to answer this question. To classify the differences in their subjects, researchers often use compatibility striking personality Myers-Briggs. The href = "http://www.personalitydesk.com/index.php"> Myers Briggs Type Indicator personality is most common stock in the world, and provides an easy to understand for basic studies on compatibility. The theory of Myers-Briggs said that our differences radical ideas, making decisions, and the organization of our life can be understood by the measure of our preferences in four key areas:

• Extraversion / Introversion: This scale refers to the place where you focus your attention and energy. Extroverts focus on the external world and others, and are powered by an external stimulation and interaction with others. Introverts are more focused on their inner world, thoughts, ideas and feelings and get the energy to spend time in solitary activities or reflection.

• Sensing / Intuition: This scale refers to how they prefer to have information. Sensors gather information from a very specific attention to detail and the way of facts. They tend to be practical and oriented to the present. Intuitive tend to be more abstract in their perceptions, and tend to think more about the meaning, connections and opportunities. Intuitive are often more imaginative than realistic.

• Thinking / Feeling: This scale refers to the way you want to make decisions. Thinkers prefer decisions based on facts or data, and on the reason things logically. Feelers prefer decisions that are consistent with their values and help build harmonious relationships.

• Judging / LED: This Scale refers to the preferred way to organize your life. Judges tend to prefer the structure, programs and plans. They like clear expectations and feel the accomplishment of tasks. Observers prefer an open-ended, spontaneous and flexible existence. They like the feeling that their options are open and many opportunities available.

When the researchers analyzed the satisfaction of the couples, the factors associated with successful couples are the ones we have heard from the beginning: a good communication, shared values and interests, and the opportunity to resolve their differences calmly and openly. But when researchers Tieger Barbara Barron-Tieger and Paul studied the type of the Myers-Briggs personality hundreds of couples found that most type preferences a couple had in common, the more they were satisfied with their communication. While opposites may attract, it seems easier to maintain a relationship with someone who is like yourself.

However, this does not mean you have to find its exact type in order to build a good relationship. In fact, the most common association is between two people with two common type preferences (eg with ESTJ ISTP). The researchers also found that some such preferences are more important than others to determine compatibility, and some types are particularly likely to be incompatible.

In a 1981 study, researcher Ruth Sherman found that differences in extraversion / introversion scale caused most conflicts in the long-term relationships. In particular, the combinations of women with men introverted extrovert caused frustration, perhaps because this dynamic goes against our traditional conception of man to be the partner the most expressive and dominant. However, this effect was found in a study that more 20. As we become more progressive in our relationships and more open to equal, preference differences in this area may become less important.

The detection level of intuition seems to play a key role in attraction. Studies conducted by Isabel Briggs Myers and others have found that people tend to be attracted to partners who share their preference for this scale. When couples have a preference for sensing or intuitive common, tend to see the world in a fundamentally similar. Couples with the same preference of this magnitude might be easier to understand others, and are more likely to believe they speak the same language.

Although the similarity detection systems / intuition scale can determine the attraction, long-term support seems to be much more complicated. The last three scales-S / N, T / F and J / P-play a complex role in determining compatibility. These scales have a fundamental impact on how we communicate and prioritize our lives, and therefore have the potential to give rise to misunderstanding, miscommunication and conflicting goals in relationships where existing differences in preferences.

When Tieger and Barron-Tieger researchers examined couples in the S / N, T / F and J / P scales, they found that, in general, couples with similar experience higher rates of satisfaction with their partner. But there are some combinations that worked well despite having fewer preferences in common and several similar pairs of partners who are not so successful. Some examples:

• Perception Judgers (ESTJ, ESFJ, ISTJ ISFJ) have a satisfaction rate 79% when combined with other detection systems Judgers. These types tend to be traditionalists who appreciate and respect their commitments.

• Intuitive Feelers (ENFP, INFP, ENFJ, INFJ) have a satisfaction rate of 73% when combined with the other. Intuitive Feelers tend to give great importance to relations and are more likely of all types to participate in healthy relationships and open communication.

• Intuitive, feeling, perceiving types (INFP and ENFP) had a satisfaction index 42% only when matched with detection systems, thinking, judging types (ESTJ and ISTJ), although this was one of the most common partners in couples studied. The partner NFP is likely to feel that your partner is conservative and oppressive, while socio TSJ could find the couple unpredictable and unreliable.

• When partners have a preference Feeling together, which can compensate for differences in other areas, perhaps due to Feelers desire to spend more time and energy into their relationships in general. In particular, detection, Feeling Judgers (ESFJ and ISFJ) reported a satisfaction rate of 86% when combined with intuitive, feeling observers (ENFP and INFP). They had a satisfaction rate of 67% when combined with intuitive, feeling Judgers (ENFJ and INFJ).

• In some cases have similar preferences type does not mean more satisfaction. Perception, thinking and perceiving types (ISTP and ESTP) has only a satisfaction index 33% when associated with other treatment plants. The researchers hypothesized that this is due to its results and ISTP ESTP are less interested in all types of quality of relationships.

• Similarly, Intuitive Thinking types (ENTP, INTP, ENTJ, INTJ) have a satisfaction rate of 59% when combined with other thinker intuitive. These types tend to be the most critical of their partners and may be more difficult to please in general.

Another study, led by Nancy Mariola, PhD. St. Mary's University, provides important data on marriage patterns among the types.

• Some types are more likely to marry its kind with a person of exactly the same, INFP This includes men and women and INFJ INTP ENFJ INFJ.

• There are two combinations where opposites seem to attract men with women and ESTJ ESTP INFJ INFP men with women. However, this may be due in part to the fact that these two men are also more likely to be married several times.

• Certain types showed greater dissatisfaction among the members in general. Married women with INTP men had the highest level of dissatisfaction 31%. INTP is one of the less common types in the population, in particular, can INTP important to find like-minded partner.

We can see that, in general, couples are more satisfied when associated with a partner like. However, the researchers found that, in its results, communication, common interests, and quality of the friendship of the couple were the most important factors in successful relationship. Although it may be easier to achieve these objectives with a partner who is right, is quite possible, even if there are significant differences. When couples make an effort to understand and appreciate their differences, can turn what could be a problem or a source of conflict into an asset for their association.

Couples with personality differences to find ways to support and understand each other often view their relationship particularly rewarding. It is associated with type differences are able to encourage and challenge others and learn from each other in a way that the partners do not like. Also that effective teams because they can detect and compensate for weak points of each other. Recognize how your partner is thinking and appreciate the value of their point of view because whether or not they agree with yours, is essential to a successful relationship.

Although the search for compatibility can be interesting and informative, it is important to remember each relationship is unique and each couple can learn to communicate better. When it comes to relationship satisfaction, the three main factors: communication, trust and respect, can be obtained by a combination type.
